Hulu Selangor 30km 2017

Finally, a race that happened. After 3 major DNSs, missed due to various reasons. Twincity (work), INOV8 (qingming and family), KOKK (in order to be with my beloved alma mater).

Looking back, I have been in a training rut (except for weekday runs) from the last MWM till this race. I was so anxious and totally did not expect anything at all. Tried to focus more on getting the mileage in, in preparation for SCKLM. I've been having bad LSDs which I have analyzed due to the lack of aerobic training. I wanted to improve speed, so I got back to the training plan board, put in fartlek, hills and intervals where required in weekdays. And it has all been good. And I had incorporated some drills. So I thought it should make my run better. Somehow I still got some formula wrong. Too much of speed and tempo backfired in my case. Speed should always be the sprinkle on top, not the main ingredient. This is where I got the formula wrong I guess in this training cycle. My weekly average pace has gotten faster. I was more particular about strength than before. But the LSDs were still bad.

The race was at Hulu Selangor, Kuala Kubu Baru to be exact. The journey took us about 1 hour to reach. The race started quite late, possibly to enable people to not rush their journey there. Which can be both good and bad. Good due to the above reason. Bad since, it would be scorching hot when the time finishes.

So in setting up my mind, I went to seek more info about the race. Having informed prior that the route was going to be a hilly one totally made it worse. True enough, hills were everywhere. So I tackled with how I know best. Walked my way up. When everyone complained that it was the toughest route etc, I didn't feel as much, cos I was walking at a lot of times. Tough is really obviously relative here. You take it hard, it got right back at you. You take it easy, it will be easy on you.

The race started late, 6.45, which explained the heat and the panas lit lit mentioned. I was lucky enough that it got excruciatingly hot when I was already heading back and the sun was behind me.

As I was not at my fittest self, I had to walk on most inclines, and tried not to overdo the descent since a descent was just as hard if I went as fast as the gravity took me. It then led to a U turn, which I was very much relieved of. Met the guy from Nuang, had just enough recovery with the sponge there, and headed back out. The journey back was much less tormenting. There were inclines but there were mostly descents. It gave good lesson learnt for me, to prep myself for the SCKLM. It taught me how to control my pace more. especially when I kind of lost all my senses on it.

I was trailing at no 5, and managed slowly get my way closer to the 4th runner. Kartini had long overtook her, and now I could as well. Being good sportsman, we never like compete against each other, but we tried to encourage each other up as well. But she couldn't hold her pace and we parted ways. I made my long and slow run-walk to the finish line on my own afterwards. I even had to walk at the final 1km. Managed to sprint to the finish as always and was very delighted to saw the hubs already waiting for me at the finish. One of the happiest moment ever. He never gets to wait, due to various reasons. But that was the day that he could and it was the best mother's day gift ever.

Despite being a tough route, it was undeniably a fun and interesting route. It has left me sore for few days, right to just a day prior to SCKLM. It got better right before the race. I especially love the beautiful photos by the photogs, and truly organised event. Good job to the organiser.
