Training Rut, Training Reset, Reflections and everything else.
The most successful, and satisfying running result that I had so far this year was the March's Malaysia Women Marathon 2017.
Other than that, it has been the same. Plateau. Flat. Indifferent.
To make things worse, most longruns have always felt tough. I was lucky enough that I could still secure decent races (Hulu Selangor 30km particularly, Semenyih Eco Trail for a mental boosting podium finish, and 2:10 ish kind of halfs). Those are lucky results I would say. Based on the trainings, it should have been much worse.
So I decided that I need to revamp the way I do things. Well, I have never really do the same thing all along anyway. I have always tried to spice things up. But, luck wasn't at my side. The spices that I tried to sprinkle, backfired. I knew it had backfired me months back, but not sure how it had affected me that bad. But few weeks before today, I've been getting a lot of interests on heart rate based training again, doing easy effort trainings, focusing on longer midweek runs, having more recovery in between runs. So I guess that's it. And somehow I know Garmin Fenix has this feature. So I slowly planted some interest in getting my hand on those.
I was few weeks out from IJM Highway Duo Challenge NPE leg. Few weeks prior was the Fraser Ultra Trail (which I will try to have a race recap later). The outcome was better than I expected, although I only got number 6, but I guess that was good enough and I got to overtake quite a number of people towards the end. So I thought things are getting back on track. But it was not still. The longruns still fel tough in the few weekends. Despite trying to slow the effort down, it still didnt feel as good. So I guess that's it. Nothing seems to work. I really need to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch. On the week of the NPE half itself, my vivoactive decided to die. Complete flat and blacked out. I was in dire need of a running watch, Apple Watch doesn't do enough. So I went on, to get the biggest investment in my running life, on the highest spec available (well sort of). The Garmin Fenix 5s Sapphire.
That, along with the NPE race itself, I got a good gauge of how I do for a half. What my VO2 max is. What my LT is. And I would start from there. I would be more discipline. I would know better. I will not be hasty. I will focus and be the endurance runner that I am, not the sprinter or middle distance. My muscle make up is not cutout for a sprint. So I will try to stay true.
5 years of running, with 4 of them doing half, 2 of them doing full, still couldn't make me a know it all runner. Everyone tend to make mistake. And I'm the type who can settle with just the same result many years. I want something different. I want to improve and progress. So let's hope this work. What I plan to do with my training can come in the entry, hopefully.
