The Superheroes Masks DIY

Here's the final installment of my DIY entry.... a bit off track, cos it's wayyy too late.

As already mentioned in the earlier entry, I got the how to guide from Erin on sometimes-homemade. She used felt cloth. I had no idea where to find them. As always, I googled, but there seems to be not enough time to have it delivered, plus i don't need the whole bunch. I had a stack of foam paper from my last visit to Mr DIY. I had a few pieces of felt, but the only relevant colours for my superheroes masks was only the white one. so foam it is. It turned out to be a good decision, as this way, I dont need to do 2 layers of every masks. cutting them alone was already time consuming and tough. and we have to cut 2 pieces just to make 1 piece of mask? no can do.

So, lucky I've decided to use foam. Template is readily available which can be found here from cutesycrafts. I was only meaning to do Captain America masks, for all the 3 kiddos. But hubs insisted on buying the store bought masks for abang, so that it can be a bit special...ok, so be it....but then I got excited and plan to have it for everyone else as well instead. I planned to put it into the pinata, so instead of wearing a party hat, the kids would be wearing the masks instead. Splendid.

First, go print the templates. Different superhero masks are available, namely captain america, ironman, hulk, batman, wolverine. for those plain ones like batman, it's very easy. just have to trace the shape and voila, you're done. For those that require certain designs, u need to cut the design as well, so it can be traced onto the felt. Yes I used felt for designing the masks. I can't have 2 layers of foam placed on top of the other can I? Captain America, Ironman, hulk, wolverine had to be done this way. I would have wanted to do Thor, but I just dont have the colour for it. Spiderman is easy, I just need to draw the webs on it. Seen here is the 'A' and the wings cut-out.

Another concern is gluing them on. I used gam gajah (superglue), but it got through to the other side. I can't have it sewn either. I only had the normal glue to work on, but that doesn;t really stick as well. to cut the story short, this type of glue proves to the champion still.

So I did the same for all the remaining masks and foam that I have, and here is the completed masks spread. I could have done more if only I have more rubber band.

Talking about the rubber band, i had problem sticking them on as well. For this, I had no other option but to use the superglue. But it's not as easy as it sound. It couldn't stick immediately while it was wet. I had to hold the rubber band in place until it stuck on. for some I had to even put something on top. These are what made the prep time even longer. Hubs worried that I couldn't finish it in time, but I was so adamant still.

Side track a little bit. I didn't know where to easily find the felt, the main reason why i used foam. But it can easily be found from the hantaran shop. The kedai hantaran from Seksyen 19 Shah Alam CT Handicraft has lots of stuff at good price. I bought the yellow and black felt from there.

All in all, so happy with the result. The kids wore it immediately, some had even asked for more. Some asked for hulk specifically, I think cos it's quite nice with the fringe and all.
