The Conquer Mission

Another sadly long overdue post. More than 10 years after. Will try to recall as much as I could

March 2015, the original bit

***

Finally, off we are heading towards fulfilling 1 of my bucket list: the Mount Kinabalu climb.

The first idea came about in 2012. That time I was pregnant. I might have had the intention before that, but it was then that I remember clearly, that I have to climb the mount someday. I think I was determined with it after our family KK trip in 2012. We went to Kundasang and got to see how majestic the mountain was. The wind was blowing very strongly. There were a bunch of hikers around possibly looking for food as much as we did as well, in their down jacket. It was already cold, even in Kundasang. Much cooler than Genting or Cameron. No aircond required, and you certainly needed water heater as well. Swimming pool was the last thing you needed. That was the major trigger I guess.

A good friend wanted to go and she found herself a gang to go, and off she went. Leaving me. Since then, every mentioning of the Kinabalu climb would give me chills and I will be so envious for those who managed to do so. Will be more envious for those who got to go more than once. So, one after another, people I knew of, went.

Earlier on, hubs has planned on climbing next year as well, with his school buddies. That didn't happen, since the organiser is kind of engaged with more important milestone in his life. So the climb had been put on hold. But before it was, I had secretly wanted to join his trip. But since it was supposed to be a guy only trip, didn't actually manage to squeeze myself in. And it got postponed in the end.

Then one day, a neighbor mentioned on facebook that they were looking for people to climb the mount with her. Definitely volunteered myself. Especially when they are our neighbors, and it means, mutual friend to both me and hubs. So no conflicting acquaintances there.

So there goes, another bucket list soon to be striked off. Managed to find buddy and register ourselves for the climb.

I started this post way earlier, and now, we are left with only 1 month left to our climb.

Not much preparation has started. I started gathering much info as soon as we have signed ourselves up. So the list of things to do, to bring was jotted down. But no purchases has been made since then. Only finally managed to buy myself the heat tech thermal last Saturday. First Kinabalu Mount Climb purchase. I relied on the official website and other blogs as my guide. They are indeed useful, as it has with many other sources of information required. Never underestimate the info that you can obtain from the blogs.

Some of my references then

As for the training, there were nothing of significance. I remember other people went for various hikes in preparation for the climb. The most significant ones that we had were:

1. Bukit Saga in Ampang
2. Few times of Gasing
3. Broga Hike
4. This was a major one. A hike in Hulu Langat/Pangsun area at Lepoh waterfall with Burung and family. He brought his 2 daughters along
5. Nike We Run KL 21km

This was one of those good memories. I cooked nasi lemak as our food during the hike. we had our picnic by the waterfall. And it was one of the best nasi lemak ever. Not sure if it really tasted that good, or we were just too starved and spent. But the memory of the nasi lemak remains till now.

My fitness activities were mostly finished by 9 max. So, going there for almost the full day, was nothing normal. It was probably 2 hrs 44 mins of hike, started 12:41pm. We finished only after the day ended.

Qaisar were between me and hubs' back, alternately.

Lope and Angah were very small, and it was the hardest climb they had. Good thing for Burung's girls, I think they tried to challenge themselves enough to keep up.

I was around 3-4 months of pregnancy when all this happened.

I kept my pregnancy quiet from all family members. For the fear of any noises and disagreements of my climb.

Hence my supposed to be celebrated Half Marathon at around 4 months pregnancy was also celebrated low key.

And that was it. Minimal fitness preparation. Mostly relying on my running fitness, whatever remains. Minimal preparation for the climb as well.

Looking back at it now. How simple life was back then. Less needs for fancy gadgets. Function over form.

May this gives warm memories as look back at these entries later on.

Cheers
