Team Malaysia Fan Run 2015

With the final competitive race concluded, the next event would be the Team Malaysia Fan Run. This time, the focus is back to the kids.

I joined the first Team Malaysia Fan Run, bank in 2012, when I was pregnant with Qaisar. It was at Dataran Merdeka, I was around 5-6 months pregnant. The fees was cheap, one of the reason why we joined. The furthest distance was a mere 7 km. We ran in heavy rain. That was the heaviest rainy race that I was in. The road was flooded with water, it was a total drench. The medal was not very nice as well, and the shirt, definitely I don't like. It was of hot material, collared even. So come 2013, I didn't even bother to give it a go. They started to offer longer distance, hence make it more exciting as well. The route is in Cyberjaya, so nice route to try. But I still couldn't overcome the lack of excitement from their first year's event. But post event last year, it seemed quite exciting, through those participated. So, I consider to give it a go this year.

This year, we have given the kids a bit more attention, which means more races for them. I could have registered one for my own, but I was not too confident as well that I would be able to run at 32 weeks competitively at the point of registration. So, since it's a good avenue for the kids as well, the theme change to FitFam then.

We arrived just in time for some slight warmup. It's important especially for the kids. then off we went. Hubs went straight ahead as usual. I knew that this is not the pace for the kids, so I stayed on with Qays, letting Papa and Qaid be. They weaved through the runners and suddenly off they were out of sight. Starting pace is important, and it's the longest distance for the kids. So I have to be even more cautious this time.

Qays were doing very well. To be frank, I wasn't actually really following his pace, but more to my relax pace combined with the perceived effort seemed to be exerted by him. I let him walk just for a while during uphill, just to reserve his energy. Words of encouragement come out, to convince that it's ok, we can catch up with them, which I was totally sure of.

When it was about to reach the midpoint where we had to make a U-turn, we finally caught up with hubs and Qaid, who seemed to be walking already. From then on, all of us ran along. We let them walk during the return uphill. Water was no where to be seen. It was already past 3 km that time. Qaid started to cringe for water. The early fast pace must have consumed him as well, which is the total opposite of Qays who was all so steady. The water station finally came and luckily Qaid was back to his feet, not like during milo, as he totally lost it.

There were a lot of crowds. There were a lot of familiar faces, but we didn't have the time to socialise much. Especially like the wide road. The sun was already hot. They did put the starting time a bit late. For us 5kmer, of course it was fine.

After getting to almost less than 1km mark, I then asked the kids to speed up. Hubs and Qaid was a bit far back, so when we started to speed up, he wanted to speed up as well, which is of his disadvantage, as he has more distance to cover through the last final push. He caught up with us, but later on lost it and finished slightly further behind.

Totally amazed with Qays. Being just a slightly younger brother, he is exposed to a lot of things at about the same time as the brother does. At 6 years (later part of the year even), Qaid only had his first race of 600m, with the Desa Park City 2013. for Qays, at 6 years, he already ran multiple races (6 with this one), have learnt about energy management and has finished a 39 mins 5km. Yes, for me that's astounding. And looking at other grown ups, casual runners, their timing is even better. Qaid finished only slightly behind, as he had slowed down before reaching the finishing line.

The result makes it the more fun and exciting. The kids liked it as well. Too bad we had to rush to football practice right after. They were a little late of course, but doesn't matter. We thought that they wouldn't be able to really stand it; early morning rise, a 5km run at a competitive pace for their stage and a football practice to finish it with. But to our surprise they could. It just proves that kids just have the energy for anything. Never underestimate them, and it may be ok to push them a little bit. Cause they might just have it in them.

At the point of writing this, I'm already 36 weeks, currently waiting for my antenatal checkup, during fasting month. Another amazement that I have with the kids is that, Qays has been fasting for few days now. We have completed 9 days of Ramadhan (10 being today), and he had only missed his fasting for a mere 3 days so far. One on the first day, as we never expect that he'll be able to fast. 2nd, we were late for sahoor ourselves. Qays is difficult to wake up, so we let him be. Still he fasted half day. Another, not sure what happened. He did have his sahoor, but he gave a call to ask permission to break his fast at noon. We definitely allowed that, as we never expect him to fast in the first place even.

This entry is more about kids' potential rather than a race report itself. I am not sure until now whether the kids actually like running, but they don't seem to have much complaint on it. And being boys, finding ways to consume their energy is always a good thing. In order not to have a segmented running life versus personal life so much, I have brought them into my world. And Alhamdulillah, they seemed to be able to take it. And this 5km is result, despite the furthest that they've ran, they even did it at their best pace. Well done kiddos, mama proud of you.
