SCKLM 2016

Another one of the much overdue entry. I don't know when will I be ever diligently update this on time. But most importantly, the SCKLM 2016 happened smoothly this year, without the haze.

But, it happened just a few weeks post raya, and we had less training. Bummer.

I managed to run more during this fasting month. 11 runs in total. with 1 at 10.5 km, with the new watch. Done at exactly the midnight of my birthday. And pace much better than non-fasting. And managed to do fasting run in the morning. Well of course, the sahur's food still intact, so it's no coincidence that I have the energy. So that has saved me from more humiliation at least during the event.

Super love the FM runners listing

Weapon of choice

So I had the big drama on one of the most important race this year. Important cos I so anxious to redeem myself from that humiliation from MWM. Important cos it's an important race for everyone. As usual, logistic is always a big deal with SCKLM. We have always park in Bangsar. But due to the new railway that leads up to Glenmarie, they no longer open Bangsar's but on few other limited places. Glenmarie and Taman Jaya were few of them. So I opted for Taman Jaya. I thought it was a brilliant idea, as it would make it closer to the venue, and save me from the long train journey. However, as I was driving there, the nearest access towards the station was closed due to construction, and I had to make a U turn at Kerinchi. I had very less buffer time. Upon reaching the station, I couldn't park at the roadside. I wanted to park at the open area car park, but the parking was bloody expensive. I then, took my chances and parked at illegal parking spot inside the station. It was even blocking the gate. But I gambled still and hope that nothing could come out from the gate. Once on the train, the drama seemed to be over. I managed to inform the hubs of the situation though.

Since I had very less buffer time, and due to the drama, I really had none to spare. I ran towards the starting line. Something came up again. Just when I started to plan on depositing my bag there, they have a new system with the bag deposit. First, they moved the location from the field to the side, just next to the building. I had to run bag to building, after running towards Dataran. Then, there was a long queue. Runners were already contemplating whether we should queue or not. They said it may take 1 hour for the bag deposit queue. I couldn't take my chances, and decided to just leave the bag somewhere near the bush. I took photo of it, for my own reminder of where I put them.

Bag hideout

I proceeded to the starting line. I went to the starting pen and it was already closed. I had my tag to indicate my starting pen and I couldn't even get in myself. I had to make myself all the way to the back, even behind the 7 hours runners. It was one of the very last. Of course I tried to squeeze myself, weaving myself through a bit in front. Me and Mazy, we planned to run together. I called her up and tried to look for her, who was supposed to be in front. I tried to catch her up and didn't get to see her until the run finished.

Full, inaccessible starting pen

At least, that marked the end of the big drama. After that, it went quite smoothly. I had informed hubs of my situation, he decided to save my bag. The photo that was taken was only meant for my own reference. It turned out to be useful for him to help save my bag. Oh, I love him for that. Not only that, he managed to grab a spare key at home. Asked the brother to drop him off at Taman Jaya, for him to ride the train and for the brother to help move the car to Glenmarie, which have ample parking with the spare key. All within the morning commotion.

So the race went quite well. I said quite because I didn't feel especially strong, but I tried all I can. I stuffed all my telekung in my pouch. That small little pouch managed to squeeze in so many things. The surau was arranged better this time. Decent covered space, with more than enough telekung. I knew they said they would have provided it, but I couldn't take my chances. There was proper water taps from the portable surau, unlike in 2014. Organisation wise, SCKLM really took it seriously this time. When it comes to running event in Malaysia, Dirigo Events will never fail. I especially like the name board for all FM participants. That is the new addition that makes it an even more meaningful experience for runners.

On the run itself, I was cruising along and was following my pace strategy quite well. I knew I may have pushed more than I should. More means, at that kind of pace, I may not have that sufficient buffer at the end. I spent between 5-7 mins at the surau. Then, after about 30km, which I reached before 3 hrs 30 mins (which meant that I was ahead than I normally had before without feeling that much worn out), I really had to use the toilet. I thought ok fine. Screw the official time, as long as I got my own timing right. Then the watched was accidentally stopped again. I so hate it when this happens, since I would need to maintain 2 garmin records for 1 single event. And having to do my own math afterwards in order to know my actual timing and pace.

I saw Hanim before that, and could catch up with her after the toilet. She was having a very good pace and consistent effort. Strong lady. But I couldn't keep up and had to bid her goodbye somewhere later, maybe about 35km or so. I was on my own and had to devise my own strategy and plan. The final part of SCKLM route proven to be tough. That was my 2nd time on that course, but the feeling was different than the first one. I had extreme excitement, motivation and better stamina the first time, but the legs couldn't keep up. This time was almost the exact opposite. I lacked the stamina and the motivation but a lot of untapped effort for the legs. The lack of training was one thing, the lack of the right training was another. I was having less tempo workout, which caused the brain to keep on sending stop signals to the muscles the moment it reaches threshold level. The legs were so underutilized to the point that I didn't need any recovery post FM.

Anyways, I run-walked like you should when the above hits you. With no particular injury this time, only then I realised that the course, especially the ending, was tough. I couldn't push as much as I should have after the roundabout toward the finishing line. I thought I should be able to keep it below 5, but it breached it by a mere 1 second. So humbling. That's how Allah puts your feet on the ground. Nothing can go as you plan, unless He says so. So for me, it was a defeat. And I accepted it. It puts my feet more firmly on the ground. No one is invincible. But as I am writing this, only then I realised that my personal pace records better timing than before. my previous PB pace was 6:52. So it was a win after all, Alhamdulillah.

Hubs was having a good time afterwards. He was such a dear again by even picking up the bag even before I reached. He was enjoying the company, enjoying waiting for the frens to reach and cheering them on (except that, he didn't do that for me). If I was supposed to run with Mazy, as cliche as it may sound, she was actually the last person I met.
