Kalumpang Trail Run 2016
Ok, this can be the shortest and sweetest run entry. Missed it by already few run reports, but I just have to report every single run, don't I?
This run was also partly due to my new running neighbour. I wouldn't have joined if there was no one else to go with me. When have you ever heard about Kalumpang. But she said, despite the name being in Tanjung Malim, it's actually not that far from our house. So since she registered, so did I.
It's supposed to be 16 km run. So it was not that far. I had very less idea about the race, little that I know that it was their second year running this event. Despite low participation, I could see that a lot of seasoned runners also participated here. Bumped into the guy who always brought his small kid to races (I first saw them running 25km. Imagine a small kid running a 25 km. Much salute). This was the first time that I saw Amy's friend, along with other familiar faces that I bumped in MWM and SCKLM 2016 before. So kind of a lot of take ups as well.
Despite having communicated with Nana before the event, this was the first event that we joined together. We only bumped into each other when I was running around the neighborhood during Ramadhan, So this run was kind of an ice breaker for us as well. So she picked me up (I didn't volunteer to drive as well, cause I know I would not serve much good with driving as well). She sounded confident on where we were supposed to go.
We reached quite early. So, she got to get ready at the venue. We didn't have to wait long for the race to start. And when we officially did, we went on our own comfortable pace, so I went ahead. I had the map of the race with me on the phone. It was through some village areas, and I have been trailing others. Upon reaching some junction which led to the main road, they started to stop. It seemed that we have lost. I brought the map out and thought that we were supposed to go the other way. When we went the other way, apparently it was not as well. There was no visible and reliable idea on where we were on the map, so were going around without a proper idea of where to go. Someone tried to call the organiser and said that we were supposed to head back inside. Somehow we missed the correct junction. Upon reaching the junction, it was no one's fault but us. We didn't watch out enough for the signs. There was a tape and arrows to mark that we were supposed to head left. We lost about 2km of distance there during this period.
The correct route led straight into a river crossing. It was quite deep, close to the waist, and long. We not only had to cross the river, we had to cross alongthe river. There were heavy bushes by the river side, so there really was no other way then to walk all the way down the river until the correct exit. It was fun though, and many were spending time taking pictures. But being alone, taking pictures that way was certainly out of my option. And I better be catching up with the rest.
Not long after that I saw Nana's friend, Amy. Without Nana. So Nana went ahead and faster. It was quite sometime that time, and that clearly indicates how much time we had lost. It let to a steep incline. and a steep downwards after that. Was quite dangerous, if you were not careful. You could have missed your step and fall down. That's another interesting thing with trail. Not only that you get to enjoy the scenery, you need to be careful and watching out your steps. It then led us to some kind of camp site and I managed to catchup with some runners whom I thought were supposed to be fast. I was left wondering then. If I had caught up with the fast ones. where could Nana be, in front or the back. I went on, leading to a narrow trail, with many runners, to the point that it created a bottle neck. There was no way for us to run for sometime, and had to walk and wait in line. This is what happens when you are at the back. Runners start to build up, within a very narrow trail and you just have to walk. There were few river crossings after that, which made us had to wait even more. There were ropes to help us with the crossing, which was very good of the organiser. But that made the line longer. I wanted to cross without holding the ropes but fell on my bum, into the river afterwards. I waited inline right after, ashamed of myself.
It then led to another incline. Only then, that I met with Nana. She was quite fast then, having left me this far. I was about half way through that time. It was that long for me to catchup with her. I went ahead, and the rest of the trail was nothing other than downwards and flat afterwards. At the seemed to be the last water station, the volunteers said that it was supposed to be 5km left. It was actually just 3kms away, and I had mistakenly reserved more energy than I should. It suddenly came to a stop not long after. Total distance clocked on my watch was 18 km, which meant that the race was under distance by 2km. Ok, I have to shamefully admit that I had silently hoped for some decent position for this race, but luck was not on my way. But it was ok, at least I know that I still have far to go. I need to train more. Nothing comes easy and free. We ought to work for it, else there will be nothing special in it. Alhamdulillah for another trail run in the book
